Building a brand to launch a business
Branding, Website, Grand Opening, Social Channel Launch
Ritual Coffee and Cocktails was conceived as a place where coffee, cocktails, and connection could come together for South Main residents, downtown workers, hotel guests, and visitors. When Ritual engaged Megan Klein Consulting, the property had been purchased and renovations were underway, but the brand itself was still being built.
That meant the launch had to do more than introduce a logo. Ritual needed to look and feel like the same business everywhere a customer encountered it: on the sidewalk, on Instagram, in Google search, at a neighborhood event, and eventually inside the shop.
The challenge was timing. The concept, menu, staffing, signage, and construction schedule were still evolving while a May opening approached. Ritual needed enough structure to build recognition before opening day without creating a marketing plan so rigid that it could not move with the business.
For a hospitality business, the experience starts before a customer walks through the door. Social media, Google, photography, signage, and word of mouth all shape the first impression.
So we did not treat Ritual as a collection of separate launch tasks. We treated it as one brand experience.
The strategy was to build a recognizable visual and verbal identity, give people a reason to follow the journey before opening, use local relationships to create authentic visibility, and make sure every new touchpoint reinforced the same feeling: thoughtful, welcoming, polished, and unmistakably South Main.
We also chose consistency over volume. Rather than forcing a daily posting schedule that would be difficult to sustain, the content plan prioritized a manageable cadence, distinctive storytelling, and meaningful collaborations.
To turn the brand idea into a coordinated launch, we carried out four workstreams:
Ritual needed a visual system that could move from a planning deck into the physical customer experience. MKC developed the foundational brand standards and helped apply them across the places customers would actually see and experience the business.
Actions:
Ritual started with no established social audience. That made the pre-opening period valuable: instead of waiting until opening day to ask people to care, we could let them follow the process and become familiar with the business before their first visit.
Actions:
A hospitality brand is hard to sell with generic imagery. Ritual needed original content that showed the atmosphere, drinks, people, and details that made the space worth visiting.
Actions:
Ritual did not need attention from everyone. It needed attention from people likely to visit, talk about the shop, and help establish it as part of the South Main neighborhood.
Actions:
Starting from zero gave us a clean look at what a coordinated brand launch could build. Within four months, Ritual had created measurable visibility across search, social media, reviews, and direct customer actions.
| EARLY WINS AT A GLANCE | ||||
| 44,486 Google Business Profile views |
23,271 Google searches |
135,300+ people reached across social |
6,000+ social engagements |
31 new five-star Google reviews |
Google also drove 1,840 website visits and 104 phone calls. Those actions mattered because the goal was never simply to make Ritual look good online. The digital presence needed to help people discover the business and take the next step toward visiting.
The reviews were another important signal. Ritual began receiving a steady stream of overwhelmingly positive organic Google reviews from customers enthusiastic about the coffee and experience. MKC supported the management team by responding thoughtfully and consistently, extending the same hospitality customers experienced in the shop into the digital conversation.
One of the strongest launch tactics was entering Ritual in the 2026 ChampionSip competition produced by Edible Memphis. The event put Ritual’s drinks in front of an audience already interested in Memphis food and beverage experiences, while also giving the team an authentic reason to create and share content.
Ritual’s “Ritual Reset” won the Judges’ Choice Award in its first year participating. Edible Memphis reported that the drink was the clear favorite among 22 judges.
The award gave a brand-new business something advertising cannot manufacture: third-party enthusiasm. It created social buzz, reinforced the quality of the drink program, and gave curious coffee customers another reason to head downtown and try Ritual for themselves.
For owner Wade Hartsfield, one of the practical benefits of the partnership was having a marketing team take launch work off an already overloaded plate. He described MKC as becoming “a fun team of colleagues and friends.”
A good launch is not a reveal. It is a runway.
Ritual’s early success came from building the brand before asking customers to buy into it. The visual identity, photography, social storytelling, digital profiles, signage, local relationships, events, and review strategy all worked together to make a new business feel established, recognizable, and worth discovering.
The bigger win was not any single post, event, or award. It was that customers encountered the same Ritual wherever they found it: polished but warm, local but distinctive, and centered on an experience worth leaving the house for.
The moral of this story: If the physical experience is special, your marketing should make people feel it before they ever walk through the door.
