How to Increase Social Media Engagement Organically: 300% More Engagement. $0 Spent. Here’s How.

Discover how one nonprofit increased its social media engagement by 300% without paid ads—and how your organization can apply the same organic strategy.

When creating social media content for your business, it’s easy to lose the plot.

There are so many voices out there telling you 8 million different things about how to make that content. They tell you that you need an agency, a social media manager, an intern, an army of influencers, and a god-like knowledge of Adobe InDesign. This advice is (for the most part) all well and good. But when you’re running a small or midsize business or nonprofit, it can leave you feeling like you don’t have the capacity to make high-quality content.

I’m here to tell you—you do.

Your organization has something that no number of social media interns or hours of Photoshop training can give you: authenticity.

How do you increase social media engagement organically?

Create authentic content that reflects the people and moments at the heart of your organization. Invite your community to participate, give them a reason to share, and use audience insights to refine your strategy. Genuine connections—not expensive equipment or paid promotion—drive meaningful engagement and organic reach.

The Case Study: How a Nonprofit Increased Engagement by 300%—Without a Budget

Oasis of Hope is a nonprofit that has served North Memphis for more than 20 years. Its mission is to create economic mobility in the neighborhood by providing invaluable programming for local students and seniors.

For Oasis to be effective, the organization needed to reach and engage its neighbors, building authentic trust with the community it serves.

My recommendation to the team was not to hire a professional social media manager, videographer, or agency. Rather, we strategized a way to turn its social media channels over to the people it serves.

The results blew our minds.

Turning Kids Into Content Creators—and Why It Worked

We’re not talking about child labor here. Let me clarify.

First, we challenged the 10- to 13-year-olds in the NOW Program at Oasis to create a commercial for their T-shirt business.

The students wrote, produced, and filmed a video that got 300% more engagement than the organization’s normal content. Even better, a whopping 70% of the people who liked the post reshared it, significantly expanding its organic reach.

The big win was that the kids who created the video were proud of their work. Their willingness to share it with their peers resulted in organic endorsements delivered directly to our target audience.

They weren’t simply featured in the content. They created it, owned it, and wanted other people to see it.

A Victory Dance: Simple Video, Huge Results

Next, we showcased a student-favorite staff member, Coach Tim, in a three-point shootout against the other program coaches.

In the video, Coach Tim makes basket after basket, the kids in the crowd go wild, and he runs back to his students to do a victory dance with them.

It’s a 34-second video—no fancy graphics or professional cinematography and it got roughly three times the normal engagement. Of the people who liked the post, 43% reshared it.

Neither video involved dropping thousands of dollars on marketing, but both achieved a priceless level of organic audience engagement.

Why?

Because the videos authentically represented the community they were made for. Each captured a genuine moment that exhibited what makes Oasis of Hope so special.

Sometimes, the most powerful call to action is creating something people naturally want to share because they feel connected to it.

Why This Social Media Strategy Worked

These videos didn’t succeed because of an expensive content strategy, professional equipment, or a convoluted algorithm trick.

They worked because they:

  • Featured people the audience already knew and cared about
  • Captured genuine moments
  • Invited the community to participate
  • Gave people a personal reason to share
  • Reflected what made the organization special

The posts built authentic relationships because they felt like the community—not like marketing aimed at the community.

That distinction matters. Social media engagement isn’t only about accumulating likes and comments. It’s about community building, brand awareness, and creating the connections that can eventually lead to customer loyalty.

The Bottom Line: How Can My Small Business Increase Engagement Organically?

Now you might be saying, “Megan, this is all well and good. But how do I replicate these results at my business? I have no cute kids around my office to create awesome content for me!”

Trust me, you can do the same for your business or nonprofit.

You are uniquely positioned to capture and celebrate the everyday moments that make your team, customers, and community love your organization. If you can tap into the heart of your community, you can connect with your audience.

In fact, I’m even going to give you my secret recipe to increase your social media engagement no matter your business model:

  • Identify what your community cares about.

  • Invite community members to participate.

  • Capture genuine moments.

  • Give people a reason to share.

  • Measure engagement and organic reach.

Boom.

You don’t need a hundred-thousand-dollar ad campaign to do this. You don’t need an army of influencers. You just need to know your story and your audience.

The steps are the same no matter where you go, but the trick is figuring what makes your business unique. Ask yourself:

  • Who is in your community?
  • What are the genuine moments at your business you should capture?
  • What does your authentic brand look like?
  • How do you give people a reason to share your content?
  • What method should you use to measure engagement?
  • Why am I asking all these rhetorical questions?

Maybe you know the answers to these questions– and that’s great. But if you want to figure out your business’ unique brand or you want to take your social media engagement to the next level, I’m happy to help. As a fractional CMO, that’s exactly what I do.

Rapid Fire: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I increase social media engagement organically?

Create content that reflects the real people, moments, and stories behind your organization. Invite employees, customers, clients, or community members to participate. When people recognize themselves in your content and feel personally connected to it, they are more likely to comment, share, and expand your organic reach.

How can I involve my community in creating social media content?

Ask customers, employees, volunteers, or program participants to share ideas, photographs, testimonials, or videos. You can also invite them to lead a social media takeover or create content around a specific prompt. Always get permission before publishing and make participation optional, especially when working with children or clients.

What types of organic content receive the most engagement?

Content that encourages participation or creates an emotional connection often performs well. That can include short videos, questions, polls, behind-the-scenes moments, customer stories, employee features, and user-generated content. The best format depends on your audience, so monitor your engagement rate to learn what resonates.

Do I need professional equipment to create high-quality content?

No. A smartphone, clear audio, decent lighting, and a compelling story are often enough. Professional production can be useful, but it cannot replace a genuine connection with your audience. Focus first on the people, story, and purpose of the post; polish should support that story, not overpower it.

How do I know whether my organic social media strategy is working?

Track more than likes. Monitor comments, shares, saves, profile visits, link clicks, and engagement rate. Pay attention to qualitative audience insights, too: Are people starting conversations, sending messages, or mentioning your content offline? Those behaviors can reveal whether you are building authentic relationships—not merely collecting reactions.

Can’t I just use AI to produce my social media content?

No. AI can be a helpful for brainstorming ideas, but it cannot replace the insight, personality and real-world perspective that make people want to engage with your brand. Audiences recognize content that feels generic, overly polished or disconnected from the people behind the business. We call it “AI slop.” It may fill the calendar but it rarely gives anyone a reason to stop scrolling, respond or share. We have seen brands turn to AI-generated content to make social media easier, only to lose the authentic voice and meaningful engagement they worked so hard to build. Use AI to support the process, but let real people, original ideas and genuine experiences lead the conversation.
