The Internet Changed Again, Part.1

Consulting with Purpose

If you feel like marketing online has gotten harder over the last year, you are not imagining it.

The rules are shifting. Quietly, but significantly.

Search engines are behaving differently. Artificial intelligence tools are answering questions before people ever click on a website. And businesses that used to rely on steady website traffic are seeing fewer visitors, even when their rankings have not changed.

So what’s a business to do? Adapt with intention.

The Sales Funnel is Fragmented

Over the past 12 to 18 months, search behavior has started to fragment. No longer do prospects enter the top of your funnel and progress logically through to a point of sale. Today’s sales funnel looks more like a pinball machine with many opportunities to gain points with your prospects through thoughtful engagement, push-and-pull tactics, and multichannel messages.

Consumers are no longer just typing into Google and clicking blue links. They are:

  • Reading AI-generated summaries at the top of search results
  • Asking ChatGPT direct questions
  • Searching on YouTube
  • Even using social platforms to find local services

Google is answering more questions directly on the results page. That means people are getting information without ever visiting your website.

This is called “zero-click search,” and it is growing.

The result? Human traffic to informational blog content is eroding but the bots are taking it’s place. That doesn’t mean you need to scrap your blog and online resource efforts. It means your “audience” has shifted and you need to write and format differently to make it count!

AI Is Flooding the Internet With Content

Another major change: AI-written content has flooded the web and we can all spot it. If you’re like me, your head tells you when something is AI generated and while the information I need is there, the heart is missing. I miss the clever writing that isn’t optimized for SEO and AIO, but it tickles my brain and makes me think.

Don’t be afraid to let AI help you outline content, think of it as a young intern with strong research skills but know that generic content is still that, generic. In a crowded marketplace, the competition for attention is fierce. Standing out requires a human element, a relatable experience, a connection with your reader. In response, search engines are prioritizing:

  • Authority
  • Originality
  • Brand signals

Make sure to write with authority, back it with your lived customer experience, and share your real case studies. Experience matters. Yours is unique. Don’t be afraid to use it.

What This Means for Local Business Owners

It all comes down to this, be the flame not the moth. Move from chasing traffic to building trust. If your name is not known, referenced, reviewed, and trusted, you are easier to overlook.

Lean into your authentic brand and customer experience:

  • Real brand authority
  • Real local reputation
  • Real trust signals

Search is rewarding brands. AI tools are rewarding authority. Local markets are rewarding reputation. But most importantly, customers are rewarding the businesses that treat them well and do good work. So I guess some things never change.
